Straight vs. Curved Stairlifts: Which do I Need?

When choosing a stairlift, one of the first and perhaps most important decision you will need to make is whether you need a straight or curved stairlift. Choosing the right type of stairlift will significantly affect your experience. It will also ensure you get a stairlift that can meet your needs.
Unfortunately, choosing the right stairlift for your home is not as straightforward as it sounds. There are a few factors that you need to consider. Luckily, the design of your staircase should shed light on the best option for you.

Partial landing

If you prefer a partial landing for your stairlifts, there are two available options. If the user can transfer from one station to the next, you can install two straight staircases on either side of the partial landing.

Alternatively, you can have a single curved track that goes the length of the stairs which would be the best option especially if the user is not able to move from one station to the next.

Straight Stairlifts

Straight stairlifts work on staircases that are straight and don’t have any turns. In most cases, straight stairlifts will cost less compared to custom-made stairlifts which are also known as curved stairlifts and they are easier to install.

With straight stairlifts, the stairlift stops level with the top or the last step. It does not curve into the landing because they run on a single track. They offer a seamless, smooth ride that is ideal for narrow stairs.

Curved Stairlifts

If you have a staircase that has corners or bends, you need a stairlift, which can manoeuvre the curves and travel around the corners. Compared to straight stairlifts, curved stairlifts are more expensive because the rail is custom-made to fit the specifications of your staircase.

In some cases, depending on the design of the staircase, the curved rail can be made up of a few individual pieces which fit together seamlessly. Because these types of stairlifts are more complicated, they take more time to make and install.

When deciding what kind of stairlift to have in your home, you might not have much of a choice. The type and design of your staircases determine the type of staircase that is suitable. The only exception is when installing a stairlift with a partial landing in which case you can choose to either have two straight stairlifts or have one curved one.
